Balancing Your 'World' (Written Oct 2nd, 2019)

How many of us wished we could have a more balanced life? I know I do. Today, we all have so much on our plate – family, work, friends, chores around the house, pets, school, children, and maybe even a business (I struggle to balance all of these, except for school, having a job, and having kids). However, I am also balancing my health, while trying to keep my head above the water and my finances in check. For this week’s blog, I am going to talk about how I am managing to try and balance my life – sharing what I hope are helpful tips and maybe you all can share your tips too, if you would like.

The first thing when I was starting my business was to think about how to balance everything in my life and negotiate my living space. At the time I was working from my living room or dining room table, then I got a small tv table. At times I was placing a tray onto my lap. When you have physical disabilities, making sure all your workspaces are not going to hurt you; a good chair, making sure the table is level with the chair – that was my struggle working in the living room. Now, I have my living room divided into three parts – my office, ‘living room’, and studio space. This may not be an option for you – you might be sharing your home with roommates or your family. Communicating what you need to others, especially if you are deciding to run your own business from home is super important. Other options might be to reserve space at the library. Most libraries offer 2 hour booking periods for a room or go to your local community centre.

On the subject of dividing your time between responsibilities and others, letting them know when you are available – set time aside to spend with them and follow through with that (unless you ill). And if you have multiple projects on the go, like I do, pick a day each week and say to yourself that you are going to work on just this project and nothing else. It may take a little time to get this habit down, however if you keep going, it works! Mondays I am creative, Tuesdays I write this blog, and Wednesdays I write. I have even used alliterations: Make Something Mondays, Tech Tuesdays (working on the website was my line of thinking there) and Writing Wednesdays.

Sometimes this is how life feels when you are trying to balance too much!

Lastly, and probably the most important, make time for yourself. None of these other things will ever be accomplished if you don’t have something to eat, or you haven’t had your nap. Stepping away from projects can be tough, I do this by making sure that I have water and when the bottle is empty – I stretch and go fill it. Or with meals, I eat in the dining room and spend time with my rabbit Theodore. I hope this quick little blog today will help you out. Some weeks are harder than others, and if you slip up, no worries, there is always next time!
